What does LGBTQIA+ stand for? Why does it keep changing?

Updated: Mar 23, 2020

There are many variations of this acronym and it continues to build as the world becomes more and more educated on the fluidity of human sexuality. As we become more inclusive as a society, these letters vacillate sometimes having one or two of the same letter, sometimes not including one. The important part is that, whatever the combination, these letters represent anyone identifying as or in support of any person(s) who are non-heterosexual or non-cisgendered. Cisgender or 'cis' is a term for anyone whos gender identity matches the sex that they were assigned at birth.

Below are some (certainly not all) of the terms within the LGBTQIA+ initialism.

  • L - Lesbian

  • G - Gay

  • G - Genderqueer

  • B - Bisexual

  • D- Demisexual

  • T - Transsexual

  • T - Transgender

  • T - Two-Spirit

  • Q - Queer

  • Q - Questioning

  • I - Intersex

  • I - Intergender

  • A - Asexual (Ace)

  • A - Agender

  • A - Autosexual

  • A - Ally

  • P - Pansexual

  • P - Polyamorous

  • P - Polysexual

  • K - Kink

  • N - Non-Binary

  • N - Non-Conforming

  • S - Sapiosexual

Keep asking questions, continue to get educated, and don't let fear prevent you from connection. It's not about perfection, it's about kindness, compassion, and making an effort.
